Sandton riders looking forward to Mamba status at KAP sani2c

Four Sandton locals will be taking on the KAP sani2c mountain bike stage race for the tenth time next month [between 15 and 18 May], gaining them “Black Mamba” status from the race organisers. The KAP sani2c is a 3 day mountain bike stage race from Underberg in the southern Drakensberg to Scottburgh on the KZN South Coast.

Peter Winn and Mike von Holdt, both from Dunkeld, have done six of their nine sani2cs as teammates. The pair are quite competitive riders and are eyeing the podium of the Masters’ category in the Race version of the event.

“I keep going back because this race is designed to delight the rider - there are many other races, but this is an experience. It’s hard riding, competitive, but fun.”

Richard van Breda from Sandton, currently living in Switzerland, and Werner van Oudenhove, also from Sandton, are taking part in the Adventure version of the sani2c, and use the race as a way to catch up: “It’s a great adventure, so well organised and a great shared experience of riding in areas you would never otherwise be able to see. It is a proper challenge but a really fun time, and we land up catching up with a lot of old friends.”

For Richard the sani2c was his first ever stage race in 2010, and he and Werner have found themselves returning year after year to experience one of the oldest mountain bike races in the country: “it’s a good way to force yourself to get fit at the beginning of the year,” he says.

The Trail version of the KAP sani2c is from 14-16 May, the Adventure is 15-17 May (all entries sold out) and the Race is 16-18 May. Entries close 6 May.
