Driven to create an extraordinary event for riders, the people along the route and our partners, the KAP sani2c purpose is twofold.
Firstly, we aim to responsibly organise a multi-day, paired mountain bike event for both local and international competitors, which, while challenging many of the disciplines of mountain biking, is within reasonable reach of athletes at all levels.
Secondly, we aspire to create employment and other commercial opportunities and develop skills by collaborating with local organisations and previously unemployed residents on the route. By providing services to the event, they generate income for themselves and their causes. In addition, our partnerships and the media coverage the race attracts not only highlight the natural beauty of the area, thereby building tourism and related entrepreneurial opportunities, but they also draw attention to important sustainability issues in the area.
The KAP sani2c crew, sponsors, partners, helpers and riders aspire to the timeless principles of mountain biking, which not only make the event great but also the sport. Over the years, we’ve agreed that, in keeping with our values, we will:
respect everyone along the way. Landowners, local inhabitants and people who use the trail are inconvenienced by us, which is why it is crucial to minimise disruption of their work and daily lives, to greet everyone we pass and show them our respect and appreciation. We have permission to access most properties on the days of the event only and, while residents, farmers and landowners are largely co-operative, it takes just one incident to jeopardise the event. Without the support of the people along the route, there would be no sani2c.
honour the environment and undertake to be environmentally responsible at all times. We leave only our tyre treads and footprints behind and avoid disturbing nature wherever we can. We undertake initiatives to offset our carbon footprint and create awareness around environmental impact to protect the world for future generations.
always be grateful and not take anything for granted. Many wish they could ride mountain bikes. Some can’t afford to, others do not have the drive, ability, mobility or health to attempt it, and others are unable to enter the event. Members of the sani2c community are not entitled; they are fortunate.
offer constructive ideas rather than complain and criticise. Everyone is trying their best, but sometimes people don’t get things right. Instead of complaining, say or do something that will help the situation.
be optimistic. We cannot control the weather or alter all terrain. Our sport is mountain biking and thus involves some climbing. We are outdoors where it sometimes rains, creating mud. Other times, the earth is dusty. Life is not all downhill and the sun doesn’t always shine. We are positive; even when the going gets tough.
appreciate that life has greater purpose than having fun. The sani2c is more than a three-day ride and one of the most rewarding things about it is that it helps others in many, many different ways.
be selfless. We will share our ideas and trails to advance our sport and help local communities. This includes respecting runners, walkers and fellow riders, and moving over with a smile, particularly when we are slower and pushing.
strive for excellence in all that we do so that we can surprise even ourselves by what we achieve. We will work and train hard and be well prepared in all instances.
be true friends to our brothers and sisters by always being honest, trustworthy, well organized, considerate, kind, grateful, responsible and reliable.
accept that there are absolutes. Some things are plain wrong. We will seek to make them right.
