Dear 2019 KAP sani2c riders,

After the 2018 KAP sani2c we were left wondering how on earth we would enhance the experience for riders in 2019. Well with great weather, hours of work on the route, a vibrant, motivated crew and lots of smiling helpers I think we can confidently say “KAP sani2c 2019 is our best to date.”

Every year we make a point of introducing new trails to the route. “Great Oke” is a work in progress and we have plans for upgrades now that it is hard packed and fast, thanks to the 2019 riders. “OG’s Trail” always runs well and the changes there added some new excitement. Day 2 saw “Woody’s Burn” being introduced. This addition always made lots of sense as it cut out the notorious climb after the College table. Its introduction to the route brought easy, scenic riding before the real work began up “Steve’s Spruit”, “Iconic”, “Shongololo”, “Haaibo1” and “Haaibo2”.

2019 saw us welcoming 100’s of new riders to the sani2c family. It was exciting to chat to many who had not ridden sani in a while, and is always great to reconnect with our regulars. 35 riders joined the Black Mambas this year taking the club to a total of 187 members. Our thanks go out to all of you for your big smiles and many compliments. It is this that drives all of us to do more year on year, which in turn will hopefully have you return to another sani2c and thereby allow us to support and invest into our communities, which is our ultimate purpose. To you the rider, we would like to thank you for your continued support!

As good as the 2019 KAP sani2c was it will always be remembered as a very dark and sad year for all of us close to the event. I am sure many of you are aware of the tragic accident on Saturday that took the lives of seven of our long serving staff both on my farm and at the KAP sani2c. They were the men who worked on the route, put together the floating bridges, off-loaded your black boxes and helped wash your bikes in Scottburgh. We have been left devastated by this loss. Our hearts go out to the families and we are doing all we can to help them.

The driver of the other vehicle has been charged with 7 counts of culpable homicide, drunken driving and theft of the motor vehicle.

The support we have received over the past week from the broader sani family has helped immensely and those closest have conveyed nothing but appreciation and thanks for all that has been done to help them cope through this traumatic time.

We live in a beautiful country with even more beautiful people and as sad as this tragic event has been we have already seen some positives. The sani2c team has never been closer and more committed to support our community in the memory of those who have lost their lives doing just that. May they rest in peace.

We have had a huge number of requests from people for details of how they can assist the families of the victims. Firstly, a fellow rider has set up a backabuddy campaign and has asked us to share the details with you. Secondly, we will be hosting a sani2c memorial ride down the Umkomaas on the 8th of June 2019, starting from Mackenzie Club at 9am and ending at Josephine’s Bridge (40kms). Anyone is welcome, although a minimum contribution of R1000 is asked as a donation which will then go to the seven families who lost their loved ones in the accident. Click here to enter.
